OVERVIEW OF NATIONAL BANK OF PAKISTAN
2.1 History
National bank ofPakistanwas established on November 9, 1949 through passing of an ordinance in the National Assembly, and was 100% Govt.-owned. NBP acted as an agent of the Central Bank wherever the State Bank did not have its own Branch. It also undertook Government Treasury operations. Its first branches were in jute growing areas inEast Pakistan. Establishment came due to the reason at that time newly born country was facing economic crises. To get rid the intrusion form the Reserve Bank ofIndia, a self owned and operated Central Bank by the name of State Bank ofPakistanwas formed in July 1948 to carry on the responsibilities of issuing the currency and controlling the flow of money inside the country. SBP after its formation demanded from the Indian Reserve Bank the assets against the Indian currency retired from Pakistan .Government of India refused to hand over the assets worth about five hundred million rupees. This dispute is still unsettled and these assets are still not delivered toPakistan. In 1949 decision, was made that the currencies of the countries were to be at par with each other and neither could alter the par value of its currency without consulting the other butIndiachallengedPakistan’s decision as an infringement of the agreement. After some timeIndiaagreed to recognize the par value both Central Banks would announce the par value of their currencies. Until June 1950, the Bank was engaged exclusively on jute operation. Thereafter other commodities were also taken up. After that Mr. Zahid Hussain, governor SBP assumed additional charge as Chairman NBP’S Board of Directors, and Mr. M.A. Muhajir became its first M.D. SBP behind the NBP, and government stood behind the SBP. Bank took a big pace in 1952, when it replaced the Imperial Bank ofIndia, as an agent of State Bank ofPakistan

National bank ofPakistanhas set higher standard of achievement it is the key business partner of Government of Pakistan.
